  • Moving to Canada for IT work – skillset advice?

    Hello all,

I’m looking for a bit of advice on how to best expand/diversify my skillset. I have a 4-year degree in IT and Business and graduated almost 5 years ago in Ireland. Since then, I’ve been working in a completely unrelated industry in Asia, so no real hands-on IT experience under my belt as of yet. I’m a hard-working fella soon to turn 27, and I feel it’s time to start making a career path.

Currently, I’m 2 months into studying the Comptia Security+ course material and should pass it by the end of next month. It’s challenging but not that hard.

Recently I applied for and got the Canadian working visa and plan on moving to Toronto come next Spring, hence the study for the security+.

What I want to ask is, after the security+ is finished, what can I do to best expand my marketability to potential employers? I’ve been looking at courses on Udemy that involve coding and programming, Linux courses and cloud etc. because my knowledge of these is minimal.

There are so many that it’s hard to know which would be useful, and which ones employers would value the most. So any advice from IT professionals on what I could do would be super appreciated!

A really big thing is you could have your certs and degrees, but what you really need is work experience, you could have all these certs and no one will want to hire you at a high level until you get some hands on experience in that part of the field.

Hmm that seems to be a problem. I need a job to get experience, but experience to get a job.

I’m talking high up, a good place to start is a help desk position. It’s a good step forward through the front door, and will show employers that you have some experience

I graduated in IT last year in Toronto and working as Full-Stacker now on Nodejs + Vue. As far as I remember my job-search there’re a lot of junior dev positions with Nodejs – Express – React, Python, Java, C# is more rare. Most of jobs that I’ve seen were for web dev, decent amount in android/ios developers, but ios professionals are a bit harder to find so job opportunities are good. If you’re going to Montreal there’re bunch of big game dev companies with considerable amount of openings any time of year. Where are you going? What field are you interested in?

If you don’t have experience to show at least do all you courses with GitHub and add it to your resume, sometimes it helps. If you have any questions text me, I’ll try to help.
