Cyber Security for Beginners

    Hey everyone,

I was wondering if there are any video tutorials, free classes, and/or white papers that may be good starting points for someone looking to learn about cyber security.

I have already read a couple white papers and watched a video regarding APTs, and I certainly am open to learning more about that matter. However, I was wondering if there is a good baseline start point as far as what beginners should start learning….maybe reading about APTs as a beginner is not a great idea for all I know.

My background is in the intelligence community, and I am working on my general education classes currently while working fulltime in the intelligence field. My goal is to get admitted into University of Arizona’s online program in Cyber Operations with a concentration in cyber defense & digital forensics, but that is a couple years off as I need 60 credits before I’m able to get into the program.

Any tips and/or pointers you can provide to get me started on learning in this field would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

You should learn networking fundamentals to begin with. Learning cyber security without networking is like learning to be a nurse without fundamentals in biology.

Cisco Networking Academy has some great entry level content that’s also free of charge.
